The safety culture of an organisation is the product of the individual and group values, attitudes. competencies
and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to, and style and proficiency of, an organisation's health
and safety management. Organisations that have a positive safety culture are characterised by communications founded
on mutual trust, by shared perceptions of the importance of safety and by confidence in the efficacy of preventive measures.
This Conference will explore some of the factors that appear to characterise organisations that have a positive safety culture including:
The role of leadership in sustaining cultural change for Zero Harm; Ensuring leadership commitment to Safety Improvement; Fundamental
engagement and culture change principles; how to involve all employees;Developing an environment where it is OK to challenge and
OK to be challenged; in respect of poor health and safety practices; Understanding organisational failure and how to create a
"failure and resistant" organisation; Assessing Maturity; strong audit and scrutiny arrangements.
The presentation will cover the following key points :
Legislation and Guidance; Planning; Responsibilities; Monitoring of Contractors; Communication; Method Statements; Contractor Management on Site.
The presentation will aim to cover the following:
Types of absence as there are many reasons for absence but sickness and health problems are by far the largest in
most organisations; Absence Policies as Employers should have in place clear policies on sickness and absence to
allow them to mange the process more effectively; Managing Long/Short term absence; Return to work interviews;
Occupational Health Advisers; Contact with GP’s; Disciplinary action; Absence and pregnancy.

Unfortunately due to the late unavailability of our key speakers for the breakfast meeting on Thursday the 26th May,
and with great regret the committee has had to make the decision to cancel the event.
We will however make every effort to re-schedule the event for later in the year. I apologize for any inconvenience
this may cause. The rest of our program for the year is unaffected.
It has been estimated that up to a third of all road traffic accidents involve
somebody who is at work. This may account for over 20 fatalities & 250 serious injuries
every week. Some employers believe, incorrectly, that provided they comply with certain
road traffic requirements, e.g. company vehicles have a valid MOT certificate, and that
the driver holds a valid licence, this is enough to ensure the safety of their employees,
and others when they are on the road. However, Healthy & Safety law applies to on-the-road
work activities as to all other work activities, and risks should be effectively managed
within a Health & safety Management system. This presentation will aim to cover :
• The legal responsibilities
• Assessing risks on the road
• How to manage work-related road safety
• The benefits of managing work-related road safety
