Maria Sanderson
President
I first joined NLHSG in 1995 whilst working as a management systems consultant. I believe
passionately in supporting people and organisations to help them develop both at a personal
and business level in order to effectively manage risk and improve health and safety performance.
This is the reason why I believe that the Safety Group has an important role to play in the region
and why I remain firmly committed to its success. I became the Group Chairman in 2005 during which
time I joined the Health and Safety department at Corus as Business Safety Analyst before being
appointed Safety Manager – Mills. Not wishing to let the “grass grow” –I have recently took on
the role of Transport Development Manager for the Long Products Business with responsibility for
developing, planning and leading the implementation of strategic improvements in safety, quality
and environmental impact of steel transport operations. In my spare time I enjoy classical music,
theatre / amateur dramatics, needlework and my garden.

Gary Gallen
Vice President
Gary is an Equity partner, based in our Manchester office. He specialises in regulatory
and criminal work including fraud, money laundering, white-collar crime, health and
safety, environment, tax, EU and competition infringements, corporate governance,
audit and review, bribery and corruption, and internal fraud.
Gary trained at PMW and Co; qualified 1995; partner PMW and Co 1995; partner
and head of corporate defence DLA Piper, Sheffield 2003; partner and head of
corporate investigation and governance Andrew Jackson, 2007. Gary joined Russell
Jones and Walker as an equity partner in 2009.
He is the Director and co-secretary of Yorkshire and Humber Fraud Forum, Health and Safety
Lawyers Association; UK Board member, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners; Board Member
and Business Crime Reduction Centre.

David Jones
Chairman
I am employed as Divisional Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for
PD Ports and Logistics that is part of the PD Ports group that owns and operates
the port of Tees, and is currently the second busiest port in the UK. I've worked
in the ports and logistics industry for over twenty years working in various operational
roles but the last eight have been spent exclusively in Safety and Environmental
management. I am responsible for providing HSE support to over a dozen various sized
ports, logistics and waste management operations across the UK and for overseeing the
implementation of the Groups Safety management policy across the whole division. I hold
a BSc in Safety and Environmental Management and I am a Chartered member of the Institute
of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH), currently I am also Chairman of the National
Ports Skills and Safety Group which as part of Ports Skills and Safety Ltd produces guidance
and sets standards, in partnership with the HSE, for the ports industry.

Laura Dougan
Vice Chairman
I currently work for North Lincolnshire Council as Safety Officer covering a wide variety of work
areas for one of the regions biggest employers. I have been working in Health and Safety for about 5 years in
different business environments so have a broad base of knowledge and experience as well as completing the
NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. I believe the work the NLHSG does for and with the
local business community in providing information and educating on many different topics is very important
and I am proud to be involved with this.

Laura Smith
Group Secretary and Membership Coordinator
I work for Clugston Construction Ltd as a Health and Safety Administrator. I am focused on
helping to maintain the high standard of Health and Safety that Clugston already uphold. I have
had experience previously in Marketing, HR, Recruiting and Training. I joined the committee in September
2008 as Group Secretary and I am keen to support the NLHSG and gaining further knowledge on Health and Safety.
